Lesbians, AIDS, Safer Sex
On Our Backs was a lesbian erotica magazine published from 1984 to 2006 that featured articles and photography on lesbian sexuality. Billed as the magazine for the "adventurous lesbian," the publication was a direct response to anti-pornography positions in the feminist movement.
The article overall frames lesbians as a low-risk group, but advocates and demonstrates the use of gloves and dental dams.

This article is the full length feature to consider HIV/AIDS among women and largely reproduces the idea that lesbians were at little risk for contracting the virus.

Safer Sex Comix #8
Gay Men, HIV/AIDS, Safer sex
This pocket-sized comic from GMHC was part of a series aimed at encouraging safer sex practices through eroticizing condom use. These comics were distributed to GMHC clients and at bars in the New York City area. Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC) later circulated copies of the comix on the floor of the US Senate as part of an attack on sexual health education aimed at gay men. In 1988, Helms sponsored an amendment to an omnibus appropriations bill that prevented federal funding for any AIDS education materials that "promote, encourage, or condone homosexual sexual activities."

Learning to be creative, to plan in advance, to stand firm on safer sex and drug-use decisions, and to seek support from others, are at the heart of these changes."
